Get involved!

LISG as an organisation relies heavily on the contribution of our volunteers. We currently have around 10 volunteers, from many nationalities and backgrounds. At LISG we always welcome new offers of help.

If you think you could help, even for just a few hours per month, or if you would like a chat about volunteering for LISG, please call 01502 501444 and ask to speak to Jolanta Bukanska the Project Co-ordinator. Alternatively you could e-mail her at lowestoftisg@yahoo.co.uk

Volunteers can help in a number of ways:

  • Advising clients at the drop-in
  • Becoming a committee member and helping to progress LISG,s objectives
  • Help to organize events
  • Help “behind the scenes” with admin or IT support
  • Help to research and apply for new funding
  • Interpreting/translation

Our Reasons for Volunteering:

“I’d like to get more experience and I like helping people”

“I enjoy being involved with different communities”

“I would like to swap learning Portuguese for teaching English…”

“I believe strongly that Britain’s strength comes from its immigrants…”

“I like to help and learn more about everything.”

“To be able to use my language skills.”

“I am interested in helping people with language issues, and helping people to integrate into life in this country.”

“I enjoy mixing with different nationalities”

“I would like some office experience for my CV.”

“To help other people and improve my English.”

Emma, one of our volunteers, writes:

“I’ve been a LISG volunteer for nearly 2 years. I usually come to the office on Fridays to advise clients at the drop-in. As a student I lived in Germany for 6 months and so I know how daunting it can be to approach official organizations in a second language, particularly by phone. I was really grateful to locals who helped me, and thought I could put my work experience in various government departments to good use by helping clients to cut through the “red tape”.

I feel I’ve gained a lot through being a volunteer at LISG: as well as meeting loads of new friends, my CV is blooming. I have become LISG’s company secretary and have had training in website construction, first aid and child protection. I bring my baby daughter to work with me. She loves all the attention from clients and other staff, and is starting to learn Polish and Kurdish as well as English- she’s become our little mascot!”
